Culinary Literacy

Updike, originally uploaded by WBUR.
As fitting homage to the great literary genius John Updike, especially apropos for readers of this site, might I recommend “John Updike Ruminates on Matters Gustatory,” written in 1982 by then NY Times food critic Mimi Sheraton?

The article features snippets of Updike’s culinary experiences, including his personal battles watching his waistline to college lecture circuit meals and the Gotham restaurant scene, as well as how Updike channeled his gastronomic obsessions through his two most notable characters: Henry Bech and Harry Angstrom.

Dig in here.
